Joyeuse Saint Valentin!
February 14, 2018
As the thoughts of many in the world turn to romance and things of the heart, France can claim a special link to the tradition of Valentine's Day. The earliest surviving Valentine has its origins in this beautiful country. In a 15th century poem written by Charles, Duke of Orleans to his wife as he languished in the Tower of London. He had been captured after the Battle of Agincourt in 1415 and wrote, "I am already sick of love, My very gentle Valentine." France can even boast a village with the name of St. Valentin, in the Indre region. Elsewhere in the country, people celebrate the day with gifts, favouring luxurious chocolate and flowers - and, bien sûr, delicious meals!
